At first, I found surface design challenging and frustrating. I couldn’t figure out how to make the design work cohesively and I found myself feeling like all of my patterns were overused and boring. However, after hearing Lauren Lowen speak about her experience with surface design, I realized that surface design could actually be a chance to showcase some of the characters that I have fun making outside of classes. After realizing this, the process of making a surface design became considerably less frustrating, although not much less challenging.

I still found that it was hard to make the pattern’s composition work after duplication. However, I think after lots of work, my patterns are approaching success. I am especially proud of my mockup, which I found a pattern for on a website called Pixeden.
